The kids were brilliant. Not only did half of them speak amazing English but even the ones that didn’t tried so hard and helped each other out. The icing on the cake was the location………..
Here’s a run down of a great few days
* I got to meet 80 kids from Toryo High School and 8 other JET’s from outside the city
* Whilst giving our self introductions Ann explained to the kids that she was Taylor’s fiancée. It got such a good response that everyone who went after her decided to tell them the same thing. I went for the sympathy vote and told them I was sad because I wasn’t his fiancée – it worked a treat!
* I sat at the back of the bus and met Chika Chika Chika! That was how she introduced herself anyway. She was one of my favourite kids on camp.
* The first night the kids had to follow a trail around the camp. It was pitch black and they told the ALT’s to hide in bushes along the trail and scare the kids. Dawn and I felt sorry for them but that didn’t stop us.
* We had to be up at 6:30am every morning to bow to the flag
* I played English Jenga all morning with 15 year olds – they loved it
* In the afternoon I had to work with a group to make a skit. Some ALT’s had ideas and were telling the kids what to do but I thought I’d let them be creative. We have a Titanic meets Harry Potter meets boys dressed as girls love story but I’m sure it will be fine!
* Later in the afternoon we spent two hours playing in the sea – I love my job!
* Thursday night we had a concert as one of the ALT’s, Austin, is in a band. The kids went wild especially when the band was followed by Saleem who has amazing voice percussion skills.
* The concert finished on a high as one of the kids got up and sang ‘Girlfriend’ – I swear she was better than Avril! It was so nice to see Japanese kids letting go and being themselves. They don’t get much chance to do that at junior high and so I am looking forward to meeting a few more characters in high school.
* Today was the final day and the kids had to give their performance. My group didn’t win but they were great and they even sang the chorus to ‘My Heart Will Go On’. I think it deserved first place!
